Evan from the Portland Wargamers joins us to talk about … war games! Duh! We had a great time learning about the complexities of these games and the nerd behind them!

From their Facebook Page:

Portland Wargamers meet in and around Portland, Oregon to play wargames such as Advanced Squad Leader, Combat Commander, Conflict of Heroes, Manouevre, Hannibal: Rome v. Carthage, Europe Engulfed and the like. No miniatures to paint or terrain to glue together, just maps and counters.

Evan mentions Guardian Games as THE place in Portland to get your game on every other Sunday and we think you should too! Also mentioned was www.boardgamegeek.com.

Great podcast, I really enjoyed it and your guest was good. I run a wargaming podcast myself and it is great to see our hobby get some good coverage.

It is worth mentioning as well that while Boardgamegeek is probably one of the best resources for those interested in boardgames of all kinds and those new to the hobby, it may be worth looking at http://www.consimworld.com. This is where a great deal of wargame designers, developers and playtesters are (rather than BGG) and it may be quicker in getting an answer about rules questions (depending on the game). However for those new to the hobby I’d definitely recommend checking out boardgamegeek first as its site architecture is far superior. However for those interested in heavier wargames (not the light to moderate complexity games your guest talked about), CSW is often better for answers.

I’d also dispute many of the generalizations thrown out by your guest regarding Advanced Squad Leader, while I’m not a regular player, it isn’t that difficult to find rules as it has one of the best organized rule book, I’ve ever seen, if it weren’t it would be unplayable. Many ASL players have internalized the rules, but it is very much a life style game, that is people spend their entire lives playing only that game.

Anyway thanks for the great podcast.

I’m Evan, the guest on this podcast. I just wanted to thank Chris and Colin for their comments. Also wanted to post a link to my LinkedIn profile, as I’m always looking for a job that makes better use of my nerditude.
